We are so happy that you have joined us! Hot yoga Bikram style is a 90-minute class consisting of 26 beginning postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a heated room (105 degrees). Every student has a unique first class experience that will never be forgotten, and we encourage you to be patient with your practice. It takes about 3 to 5 classes to get acclimated to the heat and 10 to 15 classes within 30 days to reap maximum benefits of yoga.
If you feel scared of the heat, nervous about not being in shape or not being flexible enough, or intimidated about not ever doing Hot Yoga Bikram Style... no problem, many people feel that way initially, this class was designed to accommodate and remedy all those concerns. In this class we have reduced the heat to 100 degrees and the time from 90 minutes to 75 minutes to help acclimate our new students who feel they need more individual instruction and demonstration of the postures.
Please feel free to jump right into our regular 90 minutes classes... our instructors are well equipped and trained to teach beginners in each and every class!
Arrive at least 15 minutes early
Don't come into the studio in a rushed panic. You come to yoga to relax and quiet the mind. Come early for your first class to allow time to meet your teacher and get registered. It is crucial to meet your teacher and to take part of the whole class, especially the beginning breathing exercise, so that you get the maximum benefits of the yoga and so that you can safely participate in the 105 degree class!
Practice on an empty stomach
It is recommended that you do not eat at least 2 hours before practice. If a special condition prevents this, eat easily digestible foods, i.e. fruit or yogurt one hour before class. Please refrain from smoking one hour prior to class. Keep others in mind.
Be Well Hydrated
At least two hours prior to class, drink 16 ounces of water. Stay away from fluids containing alcohol, caffeine or lots of sugar. Bring a bottle into class with you and take small drinks between postures (after Eagle Pose). Be conservative with your water breaks and don't let it become a distraction. Re-hydrate after class with an additional 32 ounces of water. Consider taking an electrolyte supplement to replace trace minerals and increase performance. Electrolytes are just as important as hydration, so any supplement, coconut nut water is one, is a great way to get electrolytes into your system. Refrain from wiping sweat off your skin as not allowing sweat to evaporate will cause heat retention. Please note these are general guidelines and you will discover what works best for you!
No shoes in the room
In yoga, people put their hands, and sometimes their face on the floor. You are going to take your shoes off anyway, so please remove them and place in designated areas.
No cell phones or pagers in the studio
Be courteous to others
The yoga room is a sanctuary. Please be aware of how your behavior may affect others. Be clean, perfume free, and quiet. No food is allowed.
Keep your eyes on yourself
We practice from the inside out. When you can finish your practice without knowing what the person next to you is wearing or even who else was in the room, you'll know you were truly focused.
Abandon the competitive mind-set
Yoga is absolutely non-competitive. It is not just a "work-out." It is not just "cross-training." It is a practice, which makes the body stronger, more flexible, and generally healthier. But the aim is to calm the mind, open the heart and accelerate our evolution.
Accept who you are
Rest sometimes. "Do what you can, with what you have, with where you are." Remember: "Wherever, whenever in our life we begin yoga, is perfect." No experience or flexibility is required.
